Chapter Nine

S he sticks to her own side of the bed that night and sleeps fitfully, overly conscious of where all her limbs are each time she startles awake. Justin, for his part, seems to be blissfully unaware, sprawled on his back with his breathing deep and slow, the faint trickle of moonlight through the curtains adding a dreamlike quality to the scene.

She gets up at the first light of dawn and goes for a swim. By the time she returns, the nervous energy buzzing under her skin has faded to a dull hum.

Justin is awake, looking rumpled and nursing some orange juice as though it’s a hangover cure, when Nila knows for a fact that he hasn’t had a single drink in the time they’ve been here. His grumpy expression is oddly charming.

Jesus, she’s got a problem.

“Good morning!” she says, so bright that it’s borderline obnoxious.

He grunts some kind of response, lips pressed into a thin line as he taxes her over the rim of the glass.

“Hey, do you remember...” She collects the towel she left draped over a deckchair and slings it over her shoulder before she turns to face him. His gaze flickers, then settles on her face. “What’s the name of the dwarf in Snow White—the one with the perpetual frown?” She snaps her fingers. “Grumpy! That’s it. That’s what you look like.”

He blinks, unamused. “Your phone woke me.”

“So sorry, Your Highness. Shall I toss it into the ocean for its audacity?”

“Seems fair.”

“I’ll get right on it.” With that, she wanders past him into the bedroom, grabs a change of clothes and goes to brush her teeth. She’s vaguely aware that he follows her inside, but doesn’t think much about it even when he ambles into the bathroom after her and heads for his sink, the one that’s further from the window and has his toothbrush and toiletries arranged around it.

They wouldn’t do this at home—brush their teeth side by side. But then, their bathroom at home is the right size for an amoeba rather than two fully grown humans, whereas the one here is bigger than their two rooms combined.

Yawning, Nila rubs at her eyes and ignores Justin’s presence as she reaches for her toothbrush. By the time she notices that he’s got his phone out and pointed, it’s too late: she already flicked the tap open.

A spray of bright blue water hits her.

It turns orange a second later, just before she slaps the tap shut with a curse and stands there dripping, streaks of color running down her chest and soaking into the white towel. What.

“And here’s the money shot!” Justin crows, and of course he filmed the whole thing. He also doesn’t look tired anymore.

Bastard.

She reaches out to peel away tape that blocked most of the nozzle of the tap, save for a small gap at the front. More colorful liquid sputters into the sink, and look at that: green was just around the corner. She tilts her head and turns to face Justin.
